![]() Longish post, but I hope that it may show that things here are not simply black/white, good app/bad app. Here’s What You Should Use Instead of CCleaner Why You Shouldn’t Download CCleaner for Windows anymore I may switch over to using HWInfo64 and just add in my canned message not to use the Bios Update icon and ignore the Bios Update site.Ī couple of other sites wrote about not using or altering how you use it as well last year in 2019 and previously in 2018 as well. The HWInfo64 program is very nice but partnering with this other site does give me great pause. This is perhaps a much better tool to use than Speccy since Speccy too has offers from Avastīut HWInfo64 also supports this Bios Agent Update site which is even worse in my opinion. On another note regarding one of their other products, Speccy which also attempts to install CCleaner and add an automated updater (normally might not be bad but typically most helpers and users use it as a one time use and thus adding an update checker simply uses more resources for little reason) Part of what Microsoft also doesn't like is the Registry Cleaning by CCleaner - I wrote an article about it 2013 over 7 years ago. If it were just a one-time thing once could overlook or ignore it at this point but it shows a pattern that the company is very much behind finding ways to monetize the program often via negative means. Unfortunately, since Avast bought them there have been at least a few practices that have been questionable or upsetting to users. Yes, but to be fair this is not the first time. I can now download and install various CCleaner installer versions without a peep from defender.ĭisclosure - Yes I am a moderator on the CCleaner forum, not an employee but as mods we do get some inside information that others don't see. (One of the offers is for CCleaner Browser, a Chromium based browser - surely they don't see it as a possible rival to Edge Chromium?) So it appears that MS's real issue is with the installer offers and not the reg cleaner. The various (Slim, Pro, Enterprise, etc.) installers that did not contain these offers were not flagged, even though they install the same CCleaner with the same reg cleaner included. It is interesting to note though that the only CCleaner installers they were flagging were the ones that contained bundled offers. The maintenance tool, which is said to improve computer performance, has been downloaded more than two billion times.MS are supposed to have lifted the block now, but some users may still see it flagged as a PUA.Īgreed that the registry cleaner should be removed from CC, (been telling them that for years now), and ostensibly this is why Microsoft say they are/were flagging CCleaner. ![]() Launched in 2004, CCleaner is Piriform’s flagship solution. “We encourage any user of the 32-bit version of CCleaner v to download the latest version here.” “It would have been an impediment to the law enforcement agency’s investigation to have gone public with this before the server was disabled and we completed our initial assessment.” ![]() “Working with US law enforcement, we caused this server to be shut down on September 15 before any known harm was done,” Piriform said. While Piriform said it has now patched the leak, the company said the infected software may have been used by 2.27 million people – or 3% of its user base. The malware caused the transmission of “non-sensitive data” – computer name, IP address, list of installed software, list of active software, and list of network adapters – to a third-party server in the US. Piriform, which was acquired by security firm Avast in July, said it determined on September 12 that the 32-bit version of CCleaner v and CCleaner Cloud v had been compromised in a “sophisticated manner”.Īccording to the London-based firm, a trojan was loaded into the download package – a so-called ‘supply chain attack’ – some point after August 15, when the CCleaner versions were released. One of the world’s most popular PC cleanup and optimization tools, CCleaner, has been hit by a malware attack thought to have affected more than two million customers, the app’s developer confirmed today.
